Domaine Christophe Pichon
2010 Condrieu
A dry but mellow cuvée, this Condrieu is a blend from 30-year-old Viognier vines in different parcels. We find it sweet but not cloying, perfect with food.
The nose—mostly suggesting wet stone, earth, and mushrooms—has an almost rancio character with hints of white flowers and other floral elements in the background. Honey and lychee flavors play on the palate. Rich and heady, the fruit flavors are so concentrated the wine gives an impression of sweetness, yet it is quite dry. Stony minerality marks a lengthy finish.
Food pairing: Indian and other Asian foods
Rather closed at the moment, but distantly offering white peaches and clean, grapey fruit scents. Attractive immediately for ripe, fruity sweetness on the palate overlaid with spice suggestive of nutmeg. Then intense on the mid-palate before becoming a little more delicate on a long, dry finish. Ready to drink, but will keep through around 2016.
Food pairing: Arugula salad, baked squash, cold pasta with broad beans, light curry dishes
The Creator of This Wine
Domaine Christophe Pichon
For Christophe Pichon, winemaking is a family affair. After working with his father for years, he took over the family domaine in 1991, and started created his own high-quality Rhône wines with his wife Isabelle. Now with the eldest two of their six children working in the fields alongside them, they truly run a ‘family’ domaine -- in every sense of the word.
