Saint-Véran
The southernmost appellation of the Mâconnais region of Burgundy, Saint-Véran comprises eight small villages and, like its neighbor Pouilly-Fuissé, grows only Chardonnay.
The vineyards occupy fossil-rich limestone slopes facing east, west, and south.
Saint-Véran’s name originates from a spelling mistake. It was supposed to be named after the nearby village of Saint-Vérand, but due to administrative complications, the name was accidentally spelled without the final “d”.
Accident or no, the name stuck.
Saint-Véran has since become synonymous with subtle, fruity, well-rounded white wines. Harmonious, fresh, and round, the wines are fat and lively from the first sip, with minerality balanced by a floral bouquet.
They pair beautifully with fried or pan-seared fish, seafood and mushrooms.
